The Universe Butterfly (UB) Program

Domesticating the solar system's most violent natural process into the engineering tool that carries humanity out of the cradle.

A staged, fifty-year pathway to the first kilometer-scale rotating habitat built almost entirely from asteroid material — 1 g of gravity, meters of natural rock shielding, and more than 99% of its mass never launched from Earth.

§ 01 · The Concept

A city with 1 g of gravity, aggregated in place from asteroids.

UB's end state is a rotating habitat of roughly kilometer scale at Sun–Earth L4 or L5: 1 g of artificial gravity on its interior surface, a closed-loop ecology supporting a permanent population of ~1,000, and 2–3 meters of native asteroid rock providing radiation shielding equivalent to Earth's atmosphere. Earth supplies only complexity — machines, chips, seeds, and people.

Fact 1 · Rotation, not mass

The entire asteroid belt is ~3% of the Moon's mass. Gravity must come from spin — at the ~2 rpm comfort limit, 1 g requires a radius of ~225 m.

Fact 2 · Docking, not collision

Bodies merge only at or below escape velocity — centimeters per second. Aggregation is rendezvous-and-capture engineering, already demonstrated in orbit.

Fact 3 · Lead time replaces energy

Gravitational keyholes, flyby cascades, and decades of micro-thrust cut required Δv by orders of magnitude. Early planning is the enabling physics.

Fact 4 · Never Earth-crossing

All assets stage at L4/L5 and lunar DRO under a verifiable two-maneuver separation rule — no trajectory can threaten Earth without months of visible warning.

§ 02 · The Mass Budget

Why not launch it from Earth?

~2.8×1011 kgradiation shielding alone, for a 56 km² interior

At even an aggressive future launch price of $150/kg, shielding mass alone costs ~$42 trillion and ~2 million heavy-lift flights. A single 500–650 m C/S-type asteroid is that mass — already in orbit. Earth's role is to launch what is light and precious; the asteroids supply everything heavy.

Launch carats, mine tonnes.
§ 03 · Four Engines

Each market funds and flight-proves the next.

UB never asks anyone to fund a fifty-year vision. The same capability stack is sold at four successive distances, each a standalone business.

Engine 1 · 2020s–30s

Orbital debris recycling

Capturing a derelict stage is the same operation as aggregating an asteroid — in a forgiving orbit, with paying customers today.

Engine 2 · 2030s

Asteroid-resource wholesale

Relocate whole 10-m-class bodies to a cislunar ore parking lot, for extraction companies to work at their doorstep.

Engine 3 · 2040s→

Volatile delivery (IAT)

Mars cannot warm itself with its own CO₂. Directed delivery of volatile-rich small bodies supports lunar and Mars development.

Engine 4 · standing

Deep-space rapid-response reserve

Pre-positioned mass and propulsion for planetary defense — readiness sold as a service, governed by verifiable physics.

§ 04 · Roadmap 2026–2076

Five phases. Two decision gates. One target.

2026–2031

Foundation

Incorporation, peer-reviewed publication, Engine-1 commercial entry.

2031–2036

10-m demonstration

Humanity's first controlled aggregation, at cm/s in lunar DRO.

2036–2049

100-m prototype

First crew aboard ~2043; five years of 1-g human data.

2049–2064

Kilometer-scale aggregation

Core body plus continuous feedstock at L4/L5; spin-up to 1 g.

2064–2076

Habitation & closure

Population ramp to 1,000. UB Station One — full operation, 2076.

UB sells no heroics at the moment of crisis; UB sells what is already in orbit when the crisis arrives.
Insurance cannot be bought after the fire starts.
§ 05 · The Time-Asymmetry Principle

Why now?

Demand for deep-space mass can appear in a single news cycle — an impactor warning, a lunar construction boom, a Mars program that needs volatiles. The capability to meet it is an integral: target catalogs, flight-proven capture systems, staged reserves, trained organizations — decades of accumulation that cannot be compressed after the motivation arrives.

This is UB's governing doctrine: planetary-scale capability must be built before the motivation for it, because it cannot be built after.

Motivation can appear overnight; capability cannot.
§ 06 · Why “Universe Butterfly”

Chaos is the lever by which a small civilization moves planets.

In a chaotic system, a small force applied at a sensitive point purchases a planetary-scale outcome — and orbital mechanics is the largest chaotic system within human reach. The name is not a metaphor. It is the thesis.
